Queensland children are  eligible to attend Prep in the year that they turn five by 30 June. To determine when you child can commence their prep year, use the prep ready reckoner calculator

Queensland's Prep year gives young children the very best start to school by helping them make a smooth transition to Year 1 and sets them on the path to lifelong learning. Prep is a full-time program that runs five days per week, from 8.30am to 2.30pm each day.

Occasionally, schools are asked to consider allowing a child to begin Prep early. To allow this to occur, there are legal requirements which must be met. Please note that consideration for delayed or early Prep entry an interview must be scheduled with the Primary School Principal and the final decision as to their eligibility is at the Principal’s discretion.

Parents intending to enrol their child in Prep can contact the school and request an enrolment form. Further information about Prep is availble on the Education Queensland website.

Prep Transition Statements

As the school year concludes, kindergartens will progress Transition statements to schools to assist in the preparation for the successful transition to Prep of children and their families.
Parents sign and consent to the Kindergarten teacher passing on the Transition statement to a school on their behalf and also for the school to contact the Kindy for a discussion.
What is a Transition statement?Towards the end of a kindergarten year a Transition statement is developed by Kindergartens in consultation with families. The Transition statement provides a snapshot of each child’s learning and development and includes valuable information to:
  • identify each child’s strengths and interests; and
  • ensure each child is appropriately supported for a positive start to school.
Who develops Transition statements?Kindergarten teachers in State Government approved and funded kindergarten programs are required to develop and provide Transition statements to families.  Kindergartens and long day care services will email kindergarten Transition statements directly to schools in November and December.
As the first piece of student level data provided to you, the Transition statements are a key resource to be used for planning for successful transitions for individual children and their families.
The transition statement parent/carer consent form allows kindergartens to pass on a child’s statement directly to the school.
PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR KINDERGARTEN PROVIDES A TRANSITION STATEMENT
